6. Looking after
your vegetable garden
6.2 How to improve soil
Why is crop rotation important?
• To avoid exhausting the soil
• To prevent spread of pests and disease
• To improve and maintain soil fertility
Fertilizer
• After you have harvested your vegetables,
you will need to add fertilizer to the soil to
replace the nutrients that have been lost.
To enrich your soil you can add compost
(organic fertilizer) or vermicast. Take all the soil
out of the grow box or pot, mix in the organic
fertilizer and replace the soil. You are now
ready to sow the next crop.
Remember to feed the soil regularly
with compost or organic fertilizer.
Scatter over the soil to maintain
nutrient levels.
